Are Solar Panels Worth It in Wales?

It's a reasonable question: with the Welsh weather, are solar panels actually worth installing?
The short answer is solar panels don't need hot or permanently sunny weather to generate electricity, and a well-designed solar PV system can work very effectively in Wales.
However, whether solar is a good investment for your home depends on much more than the weather. Your roof, electricity consumption, battery storage, electricity tariff and the price you pay for the installation can all have a significant impact on the savings you achieve.
Do Solar Panels Work Well in Wales?
Solar panels generate electricity from daylight rather than heat, so they continue producing electricity when it's cloudy.
Naturally, a bright summer day will produce considerably more electricity than an overcast winter day, but solar PV systems generate electricity throughout the year.
Modern solar panels are also increasingly efficient, allowing significant amounts of electricity to be generated from relatively modest roof areas.
The important thing is that your expected generation is calculated using realistic data for your property's location, roof orientation, pitch and shading.
Is Wales Sunny Enough for Solar Panels?
You don't need Mediterranean sunshine for solar panels to be worthwhile.
Solar PV is already widely used across the UK, including throughout Wales. While southern parts of the UK generally receive more solar irradiation than northern areas, South Wales can still provide very good conditions for solar generation.
The result? A typical well-positioned solar installation in South Wales can generate around 900–1,000 kWh of electricity per year for every 1 kWp of installed solar capacity, depending on its location, orientation, pitch and shading.
So a 5 kWp solar array could potentially generate around 4,500–5,000 kWh per year – despite plenty of cloudy Welsh days.
Do Solar Panels Work When It's Cloudy?
Cloud cover reduces the amount of solar radiation reaching the panels, but it doesn't stop them generating electricity.
On a heavily overcast day, output may be substantially lower than on a clear day. Over the course of an entire year, however, there is still enough solar energy available for a properly designed system to generate a significant amount of electricity.
Rain isn't necessarily bad news either – it can help remove some dust and debris from the surface of the panels.
How Do Solar Panels Save You Money?
There are two main ways a solar PV system can provide a financial return.
The first is self-consumption - When your solar panels are generating electricity, your home can use that electricity instead of purchasing it from your energy supplier. The more solar electricity you can use yourself, the greater your potential saving.
The second is export - When your panels generate more electricity than your home needs, the surplus can be exported to the electricity grid. With an eligible installation and export tariff, you can be paid for this electricity.
This means surplus solar generation doesn't necessarily go to waste.
Can You Get Paid for Solar Electricity in Wales?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) allows eligible households to receive payments for electricity exported to the grid.
Different energy suppliers offer different export rates, and the difference between tariffs can be significant.
To access most SEG tariffs, you'll normally need appropriate metering and evidence that the installation meets the required standards. Using an MCS-certified solar installer is therefore particularly important.
Ulex Energy is an MCS-certified solar PV installer, and we provide the relevant certification following eligible installations.
Does Adding a Battery Make Solar More Worthwhile?
For many households, battery storage can significantly change how the solar system is used.
Without a battery, surplus electricity that isn't being consumed when the panels are generating will normally be exported.
With a battery, some of that electricity can instead be stored and used later – for example, during the evening.
Modern electricity tariffs make batteries even more interesting because many systems can also charge using cheaper off-peak electricity overnight.
This can be particularly useful during a Welsh winter when solar generation is lower.
However, batteries aren't automatically worthwhile for everyone. Battery capacity should be selected according to your electricity consumption, tariff and usage pattern rather than simply installing the largest battery available.
What About Solar Generation During Winter?
This is one of the most important things to understand before installing solar.
Solar generation varies significantly throughout the year.
During summer, a well-sized system may regularly generate considerably more electricity than your home consumes.
During winter, shorter days and lower solar irradiation mean generation can be much lower.
A solar installation should therefore be assessed over an entire year rather than judging its performance based on a particular month.
Battery storage can help move electricity from daytime to evening, but it cannot move surplus electricity generated in July into December.
Does My Roof Need to Face South?
South-facing roofs generally provide excellent annual generation, but east and west-facing roofs can also be very suitable for solar.
An east-facing array tends to generate more electricity earlier in the day, while a west-facing array continues generating later into the afternoon.
Properties with both east and west-facing roof space can therefore spread generation across a longer period of the day.
Roof pitch, shading and available space should all be considered alongside orientation.
What If My Roof Isn't Ideal?
Even properties without a perfect south-facing roof may still achieve a good return.
Solar panels can potentially be installed on:
East and west-facing roofs
Flat roofs
Garages and outbuildings
Ground-mounted systems
Some listed and conservation properties, subject to the appropriate permissions
The important thing is to assess the property properly before deciding whether solar is worthwhile.
How Long Do Solar Panels Last?
Modern solar panels are designed as long-term investments.
Many manufacturers now provide lengthy product and performance warranties, and panels can continue generating electricity for 25 years or considerably longer.
The inverter and battery may have shorter expected lifespans than the panels themselves, so these potential replacement costs should be considered when assessing the long-term economics of a system.
A good solar proposal should look beyond the headline first-year saving and consider the system over its expected lifetime.
How Long Does Solar Take to Pay for Itself in Wales?
There isn't one accurate payback period that applies to every property.
Payback depends on factors including:
Installation cost
System size
Annual solar generation
Household electricity consumption
How much solar electricity you use yourself
Whether you have battery storage
Your import electricity tariff
Your export tariff
Future electricity prices
A household with high electricity consumption and a suitable roof can have very different economics from a low-consumption property with significant shading.
What About Electric Cars and Heat Pumps?
If you're planning to purchase an electric vehicle or install a heat pump, your future electricity consumption could be considerably higher than it is today.
That can make solar particularly attractive because you're replacing more purchased electricity with electricity generated at home.
However, timing matters - EV charging can often be moved to periods when electricity is cheap or solar generation is high. Heat pumps, on the other hand, generally consume the most electricity during winter when solar generation is at its lowest.
A good solar design should therefore consider your future energy requirements rather than simply looking at your last electricity bill.
So, Are Solar Panels Worth It in Wales?
For many Welsh homes, absolutely.
Wales receives more than enough daylight for solar PV to provide meaningful annual electricity generation, despite our reputation for cloudy and rainy weather.
The more important question is whether the proposed system represents good value for your particular property.
A correctly designed system should consider your roof, electricity consumption, future requirements, battery storage, tariffs and local grid restrictions before determining what should be installed.
